CDM1001: Introduction to Culture and Design Management

Interdisciplinary thinking lies at the heart of Culture and Design Management. This course introduces fundamental perspectives, concepts, and methods across culture, design, management, UX, technology, art, branding, and marketing. Through lectures, case discussions, and interdisciplinary projects, students will learn to connect these domains and develop thoughtful strategies for real-world opportunities.

Deliverable #1: Pop-up Store Design Critique

Visit one pop-up store, marketing booth, exhibition booth, or comparable temporary branded space. Analyze how Art, Graphic Design, Product Design, Interaction Design, and Service Design shape the visitor experience, and examine how these elements work together. Go beyond description or personal preference. Use specific field observations and visual evidence to explain the design decisions, their effects, their alignment with the purpose and targeted visitors, and possible improvements.

Contents should include

  1. Case context

    • Selected space, visit context, purpose, targeted visitors, and clear distinction among official information, observation, and interpretation.
  2. Design-element analysis

    • Relevant Art, Graphic, Product/Spatial, Interaction, and Service Design decisions and their effects.
  3. Integrated critique

    • At least three meaningful relationships among design domains and their effect on the overall experience.
  4. Improvements

    • Focused recommendations grounded in field evidence and the identified relationships.
  5. Reflection

    • What the case reveals about interdisciplinary, purpose-centered, and visitor-centered design.

No formal presentation is required.

Deliverable #2: Korean Market Entry Marketing Strategy Proposal

Present a clear and persuasive marketing strategy directly to Studio Mikko Laakkonen. Help the company understand the Korean market and consumers, identify the most promising opportunity, and decide how to begin approaching the market. Do not organize the presentation as a weekly process report. Use research, customer analysis, competitor comparison, and consultation only as evidence supporting the final recommendation.

Contents should include

  1. Company understanding

    • Relevant identity, design philosophy, products, and strengths.
  2. Idea and target

    • One focused design-marketing idea, target customer, and core value.
  3. Strategic rationale

    • User, customer, company, market, and competitor evidence supporting the recommendation.
  4. Development plan

    • Short- and long-term goals, actions, milestones, assumptions, and risks.
  5. Expected value

    • Benefits for the target customer, Studio Mikko Laakkonen, and its Korean-market position.

Presentation

  • Presentation time: Maximum 12 minutes per group
  • Q&A and critique: Approximately 5 minutes
  • Recommended main deck: Approximately 10–12 slides
  • Detailed research methods, full quotes, competitor tables, and intermediate analyses may be placed in the appendix.
  • All team members should participate meaningfully. Present the proposal as a professional recommendation to Studio Mikko Laakkonen.

    • Important connections, synergies, priorities, and possible future direction.
  3. Representative case

    • One project, organization, or professional practice analyzed through your interdisciplinary map.
