On May 19, Convergence Design Lab gathered for a lab dinner at a Korean fine-dining restaurant to celebrate the end of the spring semester and spend time together outside the usual research setting.
This dinner was also closely connected to one of our ongoing research projects, which explores how generative AI can be used as a new media interface to shape anticipatory experiences in fine dining. Fine dining is not only about taste; it is also shaped by expectation, imagination, storytelling, atmosphere, and the gradual unfolding of sensory experiences. In this project, we are investigating how generative AI can intervene in the moments before and during dining to modulate anticipation, curiosity, and emotional engagement.
Experiencing a carefully curated Korean fine-dining course allowed us to reflect on these ideas in a more embodied and situated way. As each dish was introduced through ingredients, presentation, pacing, and narrative, we considered how anticipation is designed, how diners build expectations, and how new media technologies might subtly transform the relationship between food, story, and experience.
Beyond its connection to research, the dinner was a warm moment for the lab community. As the spring semester came to a close, we took the opportunity to celebrate the work, effort, and collaboration that shaped the semester. Sharing a meal together reminded us that research ideas often grow not only in meetings and papers, but also through collective experiences, casual conversations, and moments of inspiration outside the lab.

5월 19일, Convergence Design Lab은 봄학기의 마무리를 기념하고 연구실 구성원들이 함께 시간을 보내기 위해 한식 파인 다이닝 레스토랑에서 랩 단체 회식을 진행했습니다.
이번 회식은 단순한 식사 자리를 넘어, 현재 연구실에서 진행 중인 연구 프로젝트와도 밀접하게 연결된 경험이었습니다. Convergence Design Lab은 현재 generative AI를 활용하여 파인 다이닝 경험에서의 anticipatory experience를 조절하는 new media 연구 프로젝트를 진행하고 있습니다. 파인 다이닝 경험은 단순히 음식을 맛보는 행위에 그치지 않고, 기대감, 상상, 스토리텔링, 분위기, 감각적 전개가 함께 만들어내는 복합적인 경험입니다. 본 연구는 생성형 AI가 식사 전후의 순간에 어떻게 개입하여 기대감, 호기심, 정서적 몰입을 조절할 수 있는지를 탐구합니다.
정교하게 구성된 한식 파인 다이닝 코스를 직접 경험하면서, 연구실 구성원들은 음식이 제시되는 방식, 재료와 조리법에 대한 설명, 코스의 흐름, 시각적 연출, 그리고 식사 전 기대가 실제 경험으로 이어지는 과정을 관찰하고 논의할 수 있었습니다. 이를 통해 파인 다이닝에서 ‘기대’가 어떻게 디자인되는지, 그리고 새로운 미디어 기술이 음식, 이야기, 감각 경험 사이의 관계를 어떻게 확장할 수 있을지에 대한 영감을 얻을 수 있었습니다.
또한 이번 회식은 봄학기를 마무리하며 연구실 구성원들의 노력과 협업을 함께 축하하는 시간이기도 했습니다. 연구는 회의실과 논문 안에서만 이루어지는 것이 아니라, 함께 경험하고 대화하며 영감을 나누는 과정 속에서도 자라납니다. 이번 랩 디너는 Convergence Design Lab의 연구 주제와 공동체적 분위기를 함께 담아낸 뜻깊은 시간이었습니다.
